Sacred Music at St. Sebastian Church

God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises.

-          United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship

St. Sebastian Church is always looking for musicians who can offer their gifts in worship. If you are interested in one or more of the following ministries or have any questions about them, please contact Christopher Urbiel, Minister of Music, at the Parish Office, at 989-400-3402, or at upperwork@yahoo.com.  If you've never been involved in sacred music before, you are nonetheless most welcome and Chris will be happy to work with you to see how your gifts might best be put to use.

Service Opportunities

In a variety of ways tailored to parish needs, choirs and instrumentalists offer a great treasury of sacred music that must be preserved and promoted. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council emphasized this and the Bishops of the United States affirmed choir members’ commitments of time and talent (Sing to the Lord 28).

Please contact Chris Urbiel for a current schedule for any/all of the following groups.

The St. Sebastian Choir sings a variety of repertoire at one weekend Mass (rotating Mass times weekly) and on holydays from September to June. The choir invites singers of at least high school age to join them each Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the church.

The St. Sebastian Ensemble offers guitar and piano-based music, augmented by other instruments, at many 12:30 Sunday Masses. This group meets at noon on most Saturdays.

The St. Sebastian Resurrection Choir assists congregational song at funerals, providing a valuable ministry to grieving families. This group assembles for funerals based on member availability.

The St. Sebastian School Choir, currently open to students in grades 5-8 of our elementary school, meets on Mondays from 3 to 4 p.m. in the School Music Room (116).
